Gareth O’Callaghan is one of Ireland’s best-known radio presenters. Over forty years, from the age of 18, his career has taken him from pirate radio stations in the late 70s, Radio Caroline in the early 80s, followed by a contract with the BBC where he worked as a journalist and as the youngest radio presenter on BBC Radio 2 back then, and finally returning home to RTE 2FM for fifteen years, where his show ‘Gareth O’Callaghan in the Afternoon’ became Ireland’s most listened-to afternoon radio programme for almost 15 years.

During the 90s, he was also appointed to the role of producer and co-presenter on Gay Byrne’s daily morning radio show on RTE Radio 1.

He is the author of seven bestselling books. His most recent, ‘What Matters Now’, was published in March 2021- the story of his 2018 diagnosis with a neurodegenerative illness called Multiple System Atrophy, a rare and incurably progressive disease.

‘A Day Called Hope’, published in 2003 described his journey through depression. It has been described as a groundbreaking personal account of a debilitating and chronic condition that now affects one in five people; written at a time when depression and suicide were taboo and silenced, at a time when depression in all its guises was regarded as a mental illness and a stigma, even a shameful condition, by so many people.

Having left his radio career in 2018 in order to deal with his illness, and expecting never to have the chance to broadcast again, Gareth returned to his beloved Classic Hits Radio last February for a weekly radio show that he loves presenting every Saturday morning.

He now regularly speaks to groups and forums about the need for purpose and focus that inspires the person at the deepest possible level of the heart and the psyche. Trauma and the Soul is a subject that he believes should be in the secondary school curriculum.

Gareth is currently writing a novel, while also working on a new podcast series. He is married to Paula. They live in Frankfield, Cork.
